Kidney Patient Advocates LLC
Kidney Patient Advocates is an organization dedicated to supporting and advocating for individuals living with kidney disease. With a focus on patient empowerment and education, we strive to improve the quality of life for kidney patients. Our team of dedicated advocates works tirelessly to ensure that kidney patients have access to the resources, information, and support they need to navigate their healthcare journey. We believe in a patient-centered approach, where the voices and needs of kidney patients are heard and valued. Join us in our mission to make a difference in the lives of kidney patients. Together, we can create a brighter future for all.

What is Living Kidney Donorship?
Living donation takes place when a living person donates an organ (or part of an organ) for transplantation to another person. The living donor can be a family member, such as a parent, child, brother or sister (living related donation).

Living donation can also come from someone who doesn’t have an emotional relationship with the recipient, such as a friend of a friend, coworker, fellow member at their place of worship, neighbor or someone that hears through social media. Thanks to improved medications, a genetic link between the donor and recipient is no longer required to ensure a successful transplant. You don’t even need to have the same blood type as your potential donor to get a kidney because there are internal paired exchange programs within transplant centers and national paired exchange programs that allow an incompatible pair to match up with another incompatible pair; allowing the two donors to switch recipients.
What is Paired Kidney Exchange?
Sometimes a donor will want to donate to a recipient, but they’re not compatible, or a good match. This can be due to not having a compatible blood type, antibody levels or other reasons. Some transplant centers will help incompatible pairs of recipient/donors through a process called Kidney Paired Donation, or Paired Exchange, which involves two living donors and two recipients.

If the recipient from one pair is compatible with the donor from the other pair, and vice versa– the transplant center may arrange for a "swap"–for two simultaneous transplants to take place. This allows two transplant recipients to receive living donor kidneys and two donors to still be able to donate, though the original recipient/donor pairs were unable to do so with each other
What Are The Benefits Of Living Kidney Transplants?
The Kidney transplants performed from living donors may have several advantages compared to transplants performed from deceased donors:
  1. Some living donor transplants are done between family members who are genetically similar. A better genetic match lessens the risk of rejection.
  2. A kidney from a living donor usually functions immediately, because the kidney is out of the body for a very short time. Some deceased donor kidneys do not function immediately, and as a result, the patient may require dialysis until the kidney starts to function.
  3. Potential donors can be tested ahead of time to find the donor who is most compatible with the recipient. The transplant can take place at a time convenient for both the donor and recipient.

What Are The Challanges Of Finding Living Kidney Transplant Donors?
The number one challange is how and who to ask to consider donating a kidney to you. 70% of Patients on the Kidney Transplant Waiting List have not asked ONE Person To Consider Donating A Kidney To Them.
